Caramel Apples

Many people may not consider a caramel apple a dessert but for children it is one of the best desserts they can have. And they are also fun to make.

Children can help create these wonderful treats and they will enjoy passing them out after dinner for dessert or for snack.

For the basic caramel apple recipe you will need:

  • 8 red Washington apples,
  • 8 wooden stick,
  • 1 1/3 cup of milnot or evaporated milk,
  • cup of corn syrup,
  • 2 cups of sugar,
  • 1 tablespoon of margarine, and
  • teaspoon of vanilla.

Grease a cookie sheet. You begin by washing and drying the apples. Remove the stem and insert the stick. In a medium saucepan add the milnot, syrup, and sugar, heat until the sugar is dissolved and the temperature is 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from heat and add the margarine and vanilla. Dip the apples into the mixture and place on the greased cookie sheet. As soon as the apples are cool they are ready to serve.

Another variety of apples on a stick that is great around the holidays is Red Candied apples. This recipe is similar to the one above except you will have a bright red apple in the end instead of caramel and the taste is delectable.

You will need:

  • 8 red apples,
  • 8 wooden sticks, and
  • 3 cups of sugar,
  • cup of corn syrup,
  • 1 cup of water,
  • teaspoon of cinnamon and
  • teaspoon of red food coloring.

You can also use green food coloring and have red and green candied apples for Christmas. Again, wash and dry apples and prepare a greased coolie sheet. In a medium saucepan add the sugar, syrup and water.

Heat until the sugar is dissolved and the temperature is at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Remove from heat and add the cinnamon and food coloring, if you wish to use two different colors, divide the mixture into two containers before adding the cinnamon and food coloring. Dip the apples into the mixture and set on the cookie sheet to cool.

When cool, enjoy.
