Gingerbread Cookie Recipe
What would Christmas be like without gingerbread men, cookies, and houses? Gingerbread men have been around for who knows how long and have become a tradition that adults as well as kids enjoy and not only for the holiday season.
Today, many people use the gingerbread batter and cut it into shapes so they are able to build gingerbread houses to adorn their home during the Christmas season. So, no matter what you wish to make with your gingerbread batter you will desire to have the recipe on hand.
For this first recipe for Gingerbread cookies you will need:
- 2/3 cup all vegetable shortening,
- ½ cup of brown sugar,
- 1 ½ teaspoon of cinnamon,
- ½ teaspoon of ground cloves,
- ½ teaspoon of ground ginger,
- ½ teaspoon of nutmeg,
- ¾ cup of molasses,
- 1 egg,
- 3 cups of flour,
- ½ teaspoon of baking powder and
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
In a large bowl, mix together the shortening, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. When well blended and the egg and mix again. Now add the molasses and stir. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, baking powder and baking soda.
Add these dry ingredients to the other bowl and mix until blended, chill in the refrigerator for one hour. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. On a slightly floured surface roll out the around 1/3 of the dough into a 1/8 inch thickness and use cookie cutter for the desired shapes to create your gingerbread men or women. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
If you are using raisins you can place them on prior to baking. Bake for around 10 minutes and allow to cool before decorating. You can use all kinds of items to decorate your gingerbread men such as red licorice for the mouth, m&m’s for buttons, chocolate chips, or even gum drops. You may also use already prepared icing to decorate.
