Popcorn balls may not seem like a dessert to you, but when you realize just how sweet and delicious they are you will soon have a new favorite dessert. This is another one of those recipes where any child would enjoy helping in the kitchen.
For the basic popcorn ball recipe you will need:
- 10 cups of popped popcorn,
- 1 ½ cups of sugar,
- ½ cup of water,
- ¾ cup of molasses,
- a pinch of salt, and
- 3 tablespoons of margarine.
In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar, water, and molasses. Heat and stir until the mixture begins to boil. Then allow cooking until it reaches the hard ball stage.
This is when a drop of the mixture forms a hard ball when dropped into a bowl of cold water. Remove from heat and add the margarine. Pour over popcorn and mix until well blended, form into balls.
If you like popcorn balls and caramel, then you are sure to love caramel popcorn balls which are prepared in the same way as above with basically the same ingredients.
You will need:
- ½ cup of margarine,
- ½ cup of corn syrup,
- 1 cup of brown sugar,
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla and
- 10 cups of popped popcorn.
In a medium saucepan, mix together the margarine, corn syrup, brown sugar and vanilla. Bring to a boil and continuing cooking until the mixture reaches the hard ball stage. Pour the mixture over the popcorn and then form into balls.
For other variations, you can also add cocoa or chocolate chips to the margarine mixture to give your guests a new and unique flavor for their popcorn balls, chocolate.
Who would not enjoy chocolate popcorn balls? You can also use other extracts instead of vanilla to give your popcorn balls their own unique flavor try banana, or almond.
