Brown Gravy and Chicken Fried Steak

Brown gravy is awonderful way to get away from the traditional cream gravy for your chicken fried steak.

Many people enjoy brown gravy because it is not as heavy as the cream gravy and can have a more beefy flavor. Here is one of the basic brown gravy recipes for chicken fried steak.

You can use the remaining fat in the skillet after frying your chicken fried steak. Then you need to have these other ingredients:

  • beef broth,
  • flour, salt, and
  • pepper.

Always remember to use equal amounts of fat and flour. Add the flour to the heated fat in the skillet, season with salt and pepper, stir in the broth and bring to a boil. Stir the gravy constantly adding more broth as the gravy thickens until you achieve the desired thickness.

Try this complete recipe. You will need:

  • Cube steaks,
  • 2 cups of buttermilk,
  • 2 cups of flour,

For the Brown gravy you will need

  • ½ cup of fat (if you do not have enough after frying the steaks you can use butter or margarine),
  • 2/3 cup of flour,
  • 4 cups of beef stock,
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, and
  • pepper. Now, you ready to begin cooking.

Season the cube steaks with salt and pepper, dip them in the flour mixture and then in the egg mixture and then once again in the flour mixture.

Deep fry or pan fry until both sides of the steak are golden brown.

Now, for the gravy, be sure you have ½ cup of fat in the skillet from frying the steaks. If you used a deep fryer, you can use some of the fat in the deep fryer or just use ½ cup of butter or margarine. Add the flour and seasonings to the fat.

Stir constantly until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. Pour the gravy over your chicken fried steaks.
