Kentucky Fried Chicken Mashed Potatoes and Gravy


A very popular KFC special. We got the recipe from one of our readers. It feels and tastes like the real KFC version, but we can't guarantee the authenticity. Still it's as good so let get going.

We start out by preparing the gravy, this is a fairly simple process.

You will need:

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons melted shortening
  • 3 tablespoons of Original Breading Flour (unbleached, high gluten flour)
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 can Condensed Chicken Soup
  • 1 can water

Mix the melted shortening with 11/2 tablespoon breading flour and cook it at low heat for 10-15 minutes until the mixture browns. You will want it almost as brown as milk chocolate.

Remove it from the fire and while gently stirring add the rest of the flour, soup and water. Make sure their are no lumps forming, since this can easily happen at this stage of the process.

Bring the mixture to a boil. After two minutes reduce the heat and allow it to thicken. This will take about 3-5 minutes

Having done this it's time for the Mashed Potatoes.

  • 21/2 cups of Idaho Potato Flakes
  • 1/2 cup of margarine
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3/4 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Heat the water and melt the butter and margarine in the hot water. Add the salt and cook for two minutes on a high fire.

Add the flakes and stir until it looks like real potatoes. Add some milk. Do this with caution. You will want to add just enough to get a good consistency.

Serve it together with the gravy.
